Its English name "Tinplate" is a combination of "tin" and "plate", which explains the core component of this material: a tin-plated steel plate. Tinplate is mainly composed of two raw materials: low-carbon steel plate and tin coating, which complement each other and give tinplate superior performance.

Food packaging cans have very strict requirements on materials, especially their corrosion resistance and food contact safety. Acidic or alkaline components in food may cause corrosion to the metal surface, while the surface of tinplate after electrolytic treatment has stronger chemical corrosion resistance, which can effectively prevent direct contact between food and metal.

For example, the packaging of acidic food cans such as jam and ketchup often requires thicker tinplate to resist the erosion of acidic components. Generally speaking, the thickness of tinplate for such food packaging cans is about 0.20 mm to 0.30 mm.

The anti-rust performance of tinplate depends first on the quality and thickness of its tin plating. During the production process, the thickness of the tin layer is generally controlled in the range of 1.5g/m² to 15g/m², depending on the purpose of the can and the acidity and alkalinity of the food.
